Istanbul-based Getir was founded in 2015 by Serkan Borancili, Tuncay Tutek, Dogancan Dalyan and Nazim Salur. In order to achieve delivery within 10 minutes, the team started working from a rented office and used a former florist building as warehouse for their inventory.
The initial years were difficult for the business as Turkish customers were not accustomed to ordering groceries and other items online instead of buying it directly from a brick and mortar space. Raising funds was another big issue as the country was not particularly known for groundbreaking successful startups.
Finally in 2020, lockdown helped the business to boost its sales resulting in revenue growth of over 500%.
As of November 2021, Getir is operating in UK, US, Italy, France, Germany and many other countries outside Turkey.
Getir sells at an approximately 10% marked up price for most of the items compared to the traditional supermarkets. Along with that, they also charge a delivery fee that varies depending on the country of operation.
The exact revenue numbers of Getir have not been made public, but Nazim Salur, the CEO of Getir, claims that the business is profitable in certain parts of Turkey. Although as a whole, it’s not profitable as of yet because of the continuous expansion across continents.
Getir has raised a total of $1 billion so far in funding across 6 rounds with participation from 14 investors. Winter Capital Partners and Mubadala are the latest addition to their list of investors. Other investors include Sequoia Capital, Tiger Global Management, Base Partners, etc.
