Gorillas was founded by Kağan Sümer, Jörg Kattner and Ronny Shibley in May 2020, right when the pandemic hit the world and forced the global population to stay indoors for months.
The company started in Berlin and is one of the rapidly growing delivery startups in Europe competing with the likes of Getir, Zapp, Flink, etc.
Gorillas promises to deliver every item to the customers’ doorstep within 10 minutes and that too at the same price as any supermarket.
Gorillas makes money by selling the products at a profit. It sets a margin in the selling price itself after taking all the buying and storage costs involved into consideration. They also charge a delivery fee of $2 that covers the delivery cost for the respective order and is not a part of the profit they make.
Gorillas plan to use to robots in the future for their picking process as that will speed up the picking process and reduce the overall cost involved for each order significantly for the company.
Gorillas are not yet profitable on the books due to the continuous growth and expansion that is utilizing the margins earned by the company.
According to Bloomberg, Kağan Sümer (CEO of Gorillas) has stated that the company is looking to raise $700 million this year with the intention to turn the business profitable.
